Really good stuff.

It’s interesting that Popper could be seen as demythologizing science in a way. The myth of induction allowed scientists to feel like there was a mechanical process by which observation was transmuted into theories. Popper wipes that away, but seems to provide science with a replacement that works as well. On the other hand, maybe there is a reason Popper is not more widely acclaimed.

Also interesting that David Deutsch does take memetics seriously. Though perhaps there’s a limitation even here.

I was actually thinking of Kuhn with the Ben Anderson analogy!

Perhaps the current paradigm just sort of works even if conjecture and refutation is a closer description of what actually happens inside the minds of scientists, just like no theory of nation formation has been needed for nations to actually form.

Deutsch is a hyperautist who could not care less about fashion, and the backlash against memetics was definitely norm-policing. The concept of memes represented something true, but I don't think it was well-adapted (lol) the consensus production mechanism of the contemporary scientific community.

This might be interesting: Popper : Benedict Anderson :: Scientific Industrial Complex : Nation-State... only those who study nation-states like benedict anderson, not bureaucrats and politicians.
